Deeeeep thoughts…

April 1, 2008

I used to love Jack Handey’s Deep Thoughts on the rare occasions I got to see Saturday Night Live. Just hysterically funny. And not smiley funny either; laughy funny! If you don’t know his work, you’re in for a treat.

Bonus! His pieces for The New Yorker, like this one on how things tend to even out.

“Religion, some people say, has caused wars and
fighting. Yes, but it’s also boring to sit through a church
service, so it evens out. One moment you’re depressed because
your doctor tells you that you have alcoholism. But then you cheer up
when you go home and find a hidden bottle of vodka you had forgotten

I love “you have alcoholism”…

Ooh! Ooh! One more example from his essay, My First Day In Hell: My first day in Hell is drawing to a close. They don’t really have a sunset here, but the fires seem to dim a bit, and the screaming gets more subdued. Most of the demons are asleep now, their pointy tails curled up around them. They look so innocent, it’s hard to believe that just a few hours ago they were raping and torturing us.”
