China is getting ready

This new Amnesty International campaign is amazing, no?

While I’m at it, why not join Amnesty? When you’re despised equally by the Catholic Church, The Bush Administration, Putin’s goon squad, various Middle Eastern theocracies, and Tony Blair, then you know you’re on to a winner, morally.

  1. I like it!

China is such a strange country to visit. Some of the most amazing structures and history that’ll blow your mind but the poverty, attitudes and all round feeling of the country is not pleasant.

I can’t believe the love they get from the west despite all the horrible conditions and human rights abuses.

  2. Interesting fact–the Murdoch-owned Times is the only UK paper that refers to ‘The Tiananmen Square incident’ rather than ‘massacre’.

  3. Yup, the power of language. Slightly off-topic, but I have a problem with the use of the phrase ‘human-trafficking’ newspapers have been using a lot lately with regard to the sex-slave trade. Um, it’s women being trafficked, actually. Let’s call it what it is.

But it’s much easier to use those nice anonymous words ‘human’ and ‘people’ – that way it won’t look like we’re taking women’s issues and suffering too seriously, because that would never do.

Sorry, off my soap-box now – as you were! x

  4. I was in Egypt years ago when those tourists where shot in a Luxor temple. I was talking to an Egyptian a few weeks later and he said business was really bad since the ‘accident’.

Accident? A bunch of people simply wandered into a temple, forgetting they were hiding rifles under their clothes, and they just tripped at the wrong moment?

    Yeah, right.

  5. Oh yes, and let’s remember, it’s not only China:

  6. Myanmar/Chinese, Saudi/America, Zimbabwe/South Africa, every brutal dictatorship has its sugar daddy. It’s in the UN Charter, the “Sponsor a Broken State” program.

  7. Your site is blocked in China by the way.
