“It must never happen again”, happening again.

This Editorial cartoon from a US newspaper depicts Iranians in a very original way. Yes, it’ll certainly be easier to bomb a bunch of filthy, disgusting cockroaches!

(via Crooks and Liars)

Remind you of anything?

“One of the opening shots of (‘The Eternal Jew’) shows a pack of rats emerging from a sewer, juxtaposed with a crowd of Jews in a bustling
Polish street. Close-ups of individuals show sickly, malformed facial
features. The narration explains how just as rats are the vermin of the
animal kingdom, Jews are the vermin of the human race and similarly
spread disease and corruption. Unlike rats, however, the narrator
continues, Jews have the uncanny ability to change their appearance and
blend into their “human hosts.” A scene depicts four bearded men in
traditional Jewish costume, then shows them shaved and in modern
business suits, while the narrator explains that only a “trained eye”
can distinguish their Jewish features. In this scene, the men’s eyes
roam from one side of the shot to the other as they smile at the
camera–the men, who were filmed at gunpoint, were following the
soldiers whose rifles were aimed at them.”

  1. GL,
    The Picture is not there.

    With great love and affection,
    Ben

  2. Thanks, Ben. Think I’ve fixed it…

  3. GL,
It is there. Now I am not sure I needed to see it. It is somewhat scarey.

    With great anger and resentment,
    Ben

  4. Lot of hate behind that cartoon. Worrying.

  5. Saw this earlier… does anyone know the editorial context?

Lovin’ Series 2 by the way!

  6. Original story…

  7. Thanks Graham, so I saw. Still, the exact content of the accompanying article in the paper remains a mystery (a reference to the spread of militiant influence, perhaps?) In any case, such crass dehumanising is very telling of the state of some sections of the American media. The build up begins in earnest. Or so it seems to me.

  8. Those who forget history are…etcetera. Unnerving.

  9. The US scares me far more than any Middle Eastern country. This part of the American Media makes The Daily Mail look cuddly.

  10. Bleak. Maybe Apple need to step in and remarket Iran as iRan, bit of a makeover. Might get some people back on side.

  11. I deleted a very long, involved post here that would almost certainly have kicked off a debate about Israel’s involvement in US affairs. Apologies to the poster, but this isn’t the place.

  12. Frankly, I don’t think it was simply the stance on Isreal that made that post controversial. Thanks for deleting it.

Sorry for bringing it up again.

  13. Please. It’s from THE ONION. One of the more gloves-off satire publications in the U.S.. Of course it’s over the top. Of course they deliberately ripped off the Nazi imagery. They’re SATIRISTS who stop at nothing to skewer the hysterical xenophobia espoused by an alarmingly large segment of the US media. I’ve heard of the Onion’s absurd hyperbole being quoted out of context in lots of foreign media, especially in Asia, where many don’t seem to get the satire. Maybe it’s lost in translation. I wouldn’t expect it to be a problem in the UK or Canada. I’m not saying it’s funny. That’s a matter of taste. But it is clearly NOT SERIOUS! Please, check out their site & decide for yourself. 14. Er, Joe, it’s not from ‘The Onion’. That word at the top of the cartoon reads ‘opinion’, not ‘Onion’.

The cartoon is actually from the Columbus Dispatch.

  15. I’m sorry, but The Onion hasn’t been an effective “gloves-off satire publication” in ages.

An American accusing the rest of us of not understanding irony. I want to cry.

    Frikkin’ FOREIGN MEDIA!!!!!

  16. this cartoonist is a piece of work. He used to be the main editorial cartoonist for the LA Times (one of the things putting the lie to the notion that it’s a left-wing paper, which is something only the conservatives say about it, anyway)… Anyway, fyi, his name is Michael Ramirez and he’s a hardline bush-ist, gutter politics guy. This isn’t the first time he’s used racist/inflammatory imagery, either. Guy’s a bigot. I once canceled my subscription to the LA Times because of him, in fact. So, yeah.

  17. Wow, that looks bad! Though I would like to read the accompanying article before I make up my mind completely … you never know, the pic alone might be taken out of context, and the article could well be talking about the US governments perception of the Middle East.

Then again it could be as advertised; vile, racist hate…

I definitely agree “It must never happen again”, happening again, regardless :(

Errr, oh… well maybe not. :) I maybe should of read through the comments first. The ironic stab at the Bush Administration is probably out as a possibility :)

  19. I’m adopting some things you wrote, including: “I smell of….fill in the blank,” and “why that’s delightful!” I hope you don’t mind. I shop for new ways of expressing myself quite frequently, wear various sayings for a while like a new pair of socks and then I ditch them to the winds and borrow anew. You’re a wit.I like wits.
